Mangaluru/Udupi, May 24: The authorities have announced the suspension of fishing activities for a total of 61 days from June 1 to July 31 along the coastal region.
This move has been taken with a view to regulating fishing practices and preserving marine resources.
All mechanised boats employing any type of nets or equipment and motorised boats exceeding 10 horsepower will not be allowed to engage in fishing activity.
Fishermen, however, have been permitted to transport their boats and engage in coastal fishing activities using motorised engines with a capacity of up to 10 horsepower as well as country boats.
The government said any fishing boats or fishermen found violating the rule will face penalty under the Karnataka Marine Fisheries Act, 1986 and also disqualified from getting diesel subsidies for one year.
The joint director of fisheries has urged all fishermen to comply with the government order.
