Panaji, Jul 12: A special panel of officers has been set up to screen outfits of pilgrms or tourists visiting the state's famous Basilica of Bom Jesus before they enter the holy structure.
Rector of the basilica Fr Savio Barette said that starting from September 2011 visitors who are found dressed scantily or inappropriately will be provided with shawls to cover themselves which will have to be returned after the visit.
Barretto added that the dress code would not only be applicable to tourists but also to the other pilgrims.
The authorities at the basilica that has around 10,000 people visiting the premises took this measure after recieving complaints about scantily clad tourists and the nuisance created by visitors during Holy Mass.
The church management has also decided to prohibit photography on the premises as visitors click photographs, talk loudly and create a racket disturbing pilgrims.
The Basilica, situated at Old Goa, 9 kms away from here, is considered to be one of the best examples of Baroque architecture in India. The church is known for housing the relics of St Francis Xavier, a patron saint of Goa, who died in 1552.
The church maintained by the Archaeological survey of India is also notified under the World Heritage Monuments.
Mahalsa Narayani Temple and Mangueshi Temple situated within the neighbourhood, 20 kms away from here have already imposed a dress code on visitors and pilgrims.
