CBI to Set up Special Court in Goa

Panaji, July 9 (IANS) Goa will soon have a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court for speedy trial of the several drug and corruption related cases booked by the agency, an official said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters in Panaji, CBI joint director Rishiraj Singh said Chief Minister Digambar Kamat had agreed to the CBI request and that formalities to set up the special court would be undertaken soon.

"The entire financial liability of setting up the court would be borne by the central government. There are over 40 CBI cases pending in so many courts in Goa," Singh said.

The CBI is probing four high profile cases involving the drug mafia in Goa, including the sexual assault and death of British teenager Scarlett Keeling and the police-politician-drug mafia nexus in Goa.

"These courts will help expedite the trial of cases. They are crucial to speedy disposal of cases," Singh said.
