Mangalore: Johnson Rosario (21) Working For MRPL Firm Crushed by Crane

Mangalore, Jul 8: In a fateful incident that occurred within the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) compound on Thursday July 7, Johnson Santosh Rosario (21), working for Punj Lloyd, a company working on contract basis for MRPL, came under the boom lift of a huge crane. He died within minutes of the accident. Johnson had joined Punj Lloyd around two weeks back, as safety officer.
Johnson, a resident of Taremar in Kuppepedavu near here, used to stay in company quarters. He had planned to vacate company quarters and commute to the place of work from his residence since yesterday. On Thursday morning, he reported for work in the morning, signed the attendance register, and was walking towards his place of duty, when he came under the boom lift of a crane being operated by JDCL, another contractor firm of MRPL.
Johnson had completed hotel management course, before completing safety officer course through Western Institute of Technology. He had joined a company in Pune in January this year as safety officer. After working there for about six months, he had returned home after bagging a job in Punj Lloyd. Johnson, who used to stay at the company’s residential quarters in Lady Hill, had visited his family in Kuppepadavu on Saturday last. He visited his family again on Wednesday night to collect a key he had forgotten there during his previous visit, and that was the last time his family got to see him alive.
Johnson was the second of the three children of Albert Rosario and Juliet from Taremar Kuppepadavu. His elder brother, Jaison, works abroad, while his younger sister, Jovita, is continuing with her education.
In the said freak accident, the boom lift of the crane came crashing down all of a sudden. It fell on a vehicle and then bounced on to Johnson, and its rods pierced through the ribcage of Johnson. He died before he could be provided medical assistance.
All India Workers Union has condemned the JDCL management for negligence of the company as well as its crane operator for the incident. On Thursday, protests were staged by workers in both Punj Lloyd and JDCL. Union general secretary, Sudatta Jain, announced that bandh will be observed on Friday, and that the union will carry on with its agitation till proper compensation is disbursed to the family of the deceased. He alleged that company officials did not visit the spot for about half an hour after the incident, and that Johnson had to be carried in another vehicle as ambulance was not available in the company premises.
The family has put forth a demand for a compensation of Rs 20 lac, it is lelarnt. JDCL company executives are expected to arrive in the city from New Delhi to take stock of the situation and arrive at a decision today.
