Mangalore, Jul 7: Commuters passing the Netravati bridge and surrounding areas in Ullal were stranded for nearly three hours here on Thursday July 7, thanks to punctured tyres of a lorry.
The lorry, carrying laterite stones came to a stop in the middle of the bridge when both its rear tyres got punctured. As there was only one spare tyre, it took a long time to get a new one and replace.
The gridlock lasted from around 3 pm to 6 pm, and the worst hit were children who were on the way back from schools. School vans, buses and autos had to struggle through the traffic which moved at a snail's pace. Some of them were even seen alighting and choosing to cross the bridge on foot!
Traffic from Yekkur to Kolya was affected. It took the police quite an effort to clear the jam and restore the smooth flow of traffic.
The tyres of the lorry were finally replaced and the vehicle was soon on its way.
In all of this, perhaps the most worried were parents of the schoolchildren who took hours to reach home.
