Mumbai, Jun 29: Police are still trying to tie the loose ends in the investigation of the murder of Mid-Day journalist J Dey.
Having established that Chhota Rajan's gang was behind the murder following the arrest of seven of Rajan's men, the police are now trying to find out details about the middle man who kept Rajan informed about Dey's movements and wrongly told him about a proposed meeting between Dey and drug lord Iqbal Mirchi in London.
Police suspect that Rajan may have ordered Dey's killing over fears of his meeting with Mirchi, who is known to be an associate of Rajan's rival Dawood Ibrahim.
Police have confirmed that Dey never met Mirchi. Dey was supposed to leave to Phillipines, and it is learnt that Rajan feared he would be killed by Dawood's men there.
There is no official confirmation on whether Dey did meet anyone in London who may have misguided him as well as Chhota Rajan. Police are also investigating Dey's telephone records to find out if was being tapped.
Meanwhile, CNN-IBN reported that a CCTV footage shows four of the seven arrested in the case trailing Dey on a bike before shooting him. However, their faces are not clear due to rain and may not be accepted in court of law.
The CCTV cameras were recovered from a building close to where Dey was shot down. The gunmen had a Qualis ready in waiting to escape, police said.
