Mangaluru, Mar 29: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, city police have confiscated Rs 4.33 lac in cash that was being transported without valid documents in two separate incidents.
On March 26 at 7.35 pm, the Mangaluru east police were inspecting vehicles at Nanthoor checkpost when they found a black school bag containing Rs 1.10 lac in cash kept in the rear seat of a car. When Anil (35) and Shameer (38) who were in the car were enquired they could not produce valid documents nor could they answer police queries resulting in the police confiscating the cash and taking the two of them into custody.
On March 27 at 5 pm, acting on definite clues the police who were inspecting vehicles at the Car Street found Rs 3.23 lacs stashed in the dashboard of a car.
When the police enquired car driver C M Hajeem (21) of Ammanji Moodayi Kodi of Bantwal he said he did not have any documents to prove the bonafides of the money that he was carrying in the car. It is said that Hajeem's uncle Ismail had taken cash from a jewellery store on the street and told Hajeem to give it to his wife on B C Road and so Hajeem was driving to give away the money, Hajeem said.
Police have seized the cash, car and a mobile phone handset.
