Mangaluru, Mar 27: The street food festival that concluded in the city brought traffic issues to the forefront. The public faced inconvenience because of the event.
Street Food Festival which began on March 22 got over on March 26. There were more than 200 outlets. This was held on footpath on a busy street area. In addition, only one way traffic was allowed after 4.30 pm.
Traffic was getting blocked on M G Road, Chilimbi, Urwa and Mannagudda areas. Customers, who arrived for the fest, loitered from one to another. Traffic police were trying their best to manage the smooth movement of vehicles.
The event is held throughout the country and overseas also. But no one organizes them during the week and in a manner that causes disturbance to public and traffic movement. However, in Mangaluru the food fest was organized on the busy stretch of Karavalu Utsava grounds and Narayanaguru Circle. This created utter chaos in the evening.
This fest could have been easily organized at Kadri Park or Mannagudda Road or any other street that is not busy. In addition, it should have been limited to weekends.
The city was already stinking due to the non-clearance of garbage by the civic workers as they were on indefinite strike. In the midst of this, the food fest was generating further garbage and clearing that had become a big headache to the city corporation.
Mangaluru city police commissioner Kuldeep R Jain who arrived for the inauguration of the food fest had also showed his unhappiness. He said that the fest is organized in an excellent manner but controlling traffic had become a big issue.
