Mangaluru, Mar 24: "We have held negotiations with UGD workers to resume their work and tried to convince them to withdraw their protests. MLA Vedavyas Kamath and other leaders have also tried to convince them. But, due to the continued protests, the UGD work has stopped. Already, the issue has been brought to the notice of the government. The issue will be set right within Monday," said Mangaluru City Corporation mayor Jayanand Anchan.
Addressing press persons at his office on Friday, March 24, mayor Anchan said several STPs have become defunct as sewage water is being pumped from the wet well. People in the city need to work for a couple of days. State government will very soon find a solution to the protests of workers, he added.
“Due to the scorching heat, the water level in Tumbe has depleted. As of now the water level in Tumbe stands at 4.96 meters. If the water level goes down below 4 then it would become necessary to go for a refill from the AMR dam. If Mangaluru city receives rainfall before April 5 then there is less likelihood of a water scarcity. If the city gets no rainfall, we will be compelled to provide water through a rationing system,” he said.
Deputy mayor Poornima, chief whip Preemananda Shetty, former mayor Diwakar, standing committee president Shakila Kava, Sudhir Shetty and Hemalatha Salian were present.
