Mangaluru, Mar 22: The strike call given by the association of outsourced civic workers of corporations, city municipalities, town municipalities, and panchayats entered its 10th day in city on Wednesday, March 22. Due to the indefinite strike, the garbage handling problem continues. Although the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has taken alternative measures to handle the garbage, the situation regarding the underground drainage system has reached an alarming level.

Even though 60 vehicles are running in all 60 wards of MCC, the garbage has not been completely cleared as of now. Black spots, where the garbage is dumped at non-specified places, have increased considerably.

Garbage collection is mainly happening in huge buildings, hotels, and places where huge amounts of waste accumulate. However, the vehicles of MCC have failed to collect garbage from every household. The helpless MCC officials have conveyed this to the public. Protests by like-minded people, including Congress, are going on in support of the strike. This has increased the pressure on MCC administration.

M Shivanna Kote, president of the Karnataka Safayi Karmachari Commission, met the protesters at Independence Park in Bengaluru and held discussions. He assured them of getting orders for important decisions.

In the cabinet meeting on March 24, approval will be taken to bring all civic workers who work on an outsource basis under the direct payment method. Also, approval will be taken to recruit 100% of positions allotted in city corporations and municipalities instead of 50%.

As retired defense third-gender rural candidates are not available in the special recruitment of civic workers, other candidates will be selected.

Kote also asked the protesters to file a complaint regarding the threat of rustication from the job of protesters who are fighting for their rights.
