Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI) A senior scientist, who has favoured moratorium on new atomic plants in India after the nuclear crisis in Japan, today said it would be foolish to dismiss the common man's concerns over safety of India's nuclear plants.
P Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, said there should be "far greater openness" about India's atomic energy programmes and "several technological issues will help many of the concerned issues raised by the people of India."
"Nuclear secrecy is a matter of concern for the last 50 years and one should not dismiss the common man's concern as foolish", Balaram, who was one of signatories to the "open letter" to the government soon after the Fukushima accident asking for moratorium on new nuclear plants, said at a public debate on `Safety aspects of India?s Nuclear Power Plants? organized by the Nehru Centre here.
