Dubai: Gulf Airlines Need 1700 Pilots Every Year

Dubai, Jun 8 (PTI) Airlines in the Gulf countries are facing a critical shortage of pilots to staff their growing fleets, with at least 1,700 new professionals needed each year to meet the demand.

Aviation colleges in the six Gulf countries train less than 1,000 new pilots a year, creating a significant supply gap that threatens to stall the growth of local carriers, a report from the Saudi Aviation Flight Academy (SAFA) said.

"The problem is that there just aren't enough. If we don't start training pilots today, we won't have the experience needed five or 10 years down the line to fly the new aircrafts, and in 20 years time we'll see a collapse [of the industry]," Captain Samir Kohli, head of safety and aerodrome compliance at SAFA said.

Kohli told Arabia Business that around 900 pilots are required each year in Saudi Arabia alone.

Isn’t it ironical…. Airlines facing shortage of Pilots and new Pilots facing shortage of jobs!! To save “the collapse of the industry in 20 year” according to Captain Samir Kohli, can we request the GCC airlines to open recruitment for Cadet/Ab Initio Pilots to International candidates as well. Although GCC residents for decades and our children born and raised in the GCC, yet are not eligible for these jobs even though they are Licensed Pilots. Hiring & training these Pilots now would certainly bridge the ‘supply gap’ in the future and save the candidates and their families the immense frustrations that all new pilots face in landing their first job which is most essential for a start to their career. Can we, the long time expat residents of the GCC, request that the GCC airlines review their Flight crew recruitment policies. We have a Pilot at home waiting to be hired since the past one year and we know of many others in similar situation. Email: cecilia65@gmail.com
