Mangaluru, Feb 7: The college management, parents and police department held a meeting after over 100 students of a private nursing college fell ill following dinner. An FIR was lodged against the hospital administration department and nursing college hostel.
During the meeting, the parents raised issues of quality of food, water and the facilities in the hostel. A parent alleged that there have been repeated food poisoning cases every year, but the management failed to take the issue seriously.
After dinner on February 5, several students started vomiting early morning at 4 am on Monday February 6.
As per Principal Shanthi Lobo, on February 6, students attended classes, but a few students were showing symptoms of vomiting and tiredness. She said, “As many as 20 students were taken to the hospital and were treated and in the evening all of them were discharged. In the night again, over a 100 students fell sick and admitted to hospital.
“The college will be closed down until the situation is rectified. All the problems raised by the parents will be considered seriously and the college will not be opened until the problems are solved. A few students were discharged after they recovered, while more than 20 students are still in hospital and their health is stable,” she said.
The management also said that they will pay the hospital expenses of the students.
ACP South Dhanya said, “The parents have put forward the demands and the problems to the management. The management will address the problems put forward by the parents and rectify the issue. If the management fails to respond or rectify the issue, the police department will come forward to help the parents.”
The parents said, “The incident occurred on February 5 where a few students fell sick. The management failed to inform the parents on time. Even though the students complain about water and food facilities and its quality, the management do not take it seriously.”
On Tuesday February 7 morning, 13 students were admitted to the hospital who were showing symptoms.
The medical team and doctors have visited the hostel and taken the samples of food and water and are waiting for the FSL report. The district administration has instructed the medical team to closely monitor the situation.
