Udupi, Feb 4: Residence of the deputy commissioner (DC) of the district is the witness for ultra-modern cleanliness programme. The dry waste that falls inside the compound of the house is effectively handled through a new experimental method. A dry leaves compost bed is built for the accumulation of dry leaves that fall from the plants and trees.
The leaves and grass that are collected in the compound are mixed with cow dung on a 10 feet long and six feet wide bed on which is covered by gunny bags. Water needs to be sprinkled on the bed every day. After days this turns into excellent organic manure that can be used to garden or it is possible to even grow plants on the bed of manure. Most important is that the compound of the residence is free of dry waste.
Already the drum compost method is implemented in the residence of DC for handling wet waste. The unique compost bed is built by civic workers of SLRM on the guidance of the CEO of zilla panchayat. The workers were trained by Vellore Srinivasan. Raghunath, consultant of Swachh Bharat mission (Rural) has guided the workers.
DC Kurma Rao said, “Dry leaves compost bed is a model for how dry waste can be converted into a resource. Public can also make use of the same method instead of burning or throwing the dry waste that falls from the trees or plants.”
Prasanna H, CEO of zilla panchayat said, “The waste that is collected in the district is handled effectively through various methods. This unique dry leaves compost bed is experimentally introduced in the residence of DC in order to inspire the public. In future, this will be introduced in all gram panchayats, primary health centres and government offices. If the public wants more information on converting waste into resources, they can take the help of SLRM cleanliness workers.”
