Mangaluru, Jan 12: Only 8,917 lecturers are working in government PU colleges of the state, out of the allotted 12,858 posts. For many years 3,941 vacant positions are not filled.
As the PU education department is getting ready to conduct examination in special manner this year, it saw the shortage of lecturers in government colleges. Guest lecturers are taking classes in the position of permanent lecturers.
In 1,200 government PU colleges of the state, there are no physical education lecturers at all. Along with primary and high school, physical education lecturers are available in degree colleges also. But government PU colleges do not have the same.
In aided and private PU colleges, 90% of positions of physical education lecturers are filled and they are doing an excellent job in the field of sports. However, in government colleges fee is collected from students towards sports but physical education lecturers are not recruited.
In the allotted lecturers positions in PU government colleges in the state the most shortage is noticed in business studies subject. Many years have elapsed since 501 posts in the state fell vacant. In addition 487 posts in economics, 431 posts in English, 418 posts in Kannada and 410 posts in sociology are pending to be recruited since many years.
When PU colleges begin their academic year in June, the PU department instructs the colleges to take guest lecturers in the month of August or September. However, principal of government colleges themselves take lessons for two to three months till the guest lecturers are recruited.
Minister for education and literacy B C Nagesh said, “The work of filling 814 lecturer positions was taken up under KEA. However, due to certain reservation issues, the process is getting delayed. For the same reason the recruitments are not done.”
