Kasargod, May 11: Kerala State Pollution Control Board, on Tuesday May 10, ordered the closure of Kochi unit of Hindustan Insecticides Ltd, which produces the deadly insecticide cum acaricide, endolfan. The unit faces the charge of violating the pollution and environment protection regulations.
The board chairman, K Sajeevan, observed that the factory of the company, located at Elur near Kochi, has long been violating regulations relating to environment, air and water pollution.
It may be noted that use of endosulfan has come under protracted attack by the people from the district and elsewhere, holding it responsible for various health hazards, miseries, and deaths. Various agitations demanding its ban have not borne fruits as the central government is not willing to admit that endosulfan is deadly.
Sajeevan said that the board had asked a team of experts to examine the functioning of the factory, and that the decision to close down the unit was taken on the basis of the report of this committee.
