DUBAI - May 11: A man jumped to his death from the 147th floor of the world’s tallest tower this afternoon in the first recorded suicide since the building was completed last year, a police source confirmed.

The man, believed to be in his 30s and of an Asian nationality jumped from an air vent at the Burj’s observation deck and landed on a terrace at the tower's 108th floor, police said.

"The police operations room received a call about a suicide at the Burj Khalifa today, and CID and investigation teams were immedeatly dispatched,” Dubai Police said in a statement.

After he jumped, the man hit the metal barriers of the tower, causing some damage before landing, officials say.

Investigations showed the man worked at a company inside the Burj. Police said statements showed that the man had requested a holiday but it was refused.

Investigations are continuing.

Since I am working for Main Contractor at Burj Khalifa Project Site, I strongly deny the wording - the man had requested a holiday but it was refused. In deed man approached our Site In-charge for emergency leave and verbally approved for his leave and asked him to fill up the leave application for further process, instead he went up to 148 Level removed his safety shoes, kept his duty note book aside and jumped to his death shattering dead body in several parts spreading on various places.

At this stage of final handing over job since there is no work pressure, we have no reason to deny leave for any one. He was working with us since from September, 2005, went on annual leave for 32 days in Jan’ 2011 and resumed back on 12th Feb’2011 only

Person Late Mr. Athiraman Kannan was hailing from Melapungudi, Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu and he was just 38 years old, would have celebrated his 38th Birthday on 07th June. Unfortunately few months back only he lost his wife back at Tamil Nadu due to some Site accident where she was working as a construction worker

Since he was very good at work and working as a Foreman leading his Team of 25 workers he had access to all Terraces at higher level
