Bantwal, Oct 1: “Self-awareness is necessary to cut down use of plastic to protect the environment,” said additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Krishna Murthy.
He was speaking after inaugurating a programme of awareness against use of plastic and cleanliness for environment protection held at Suvidha Sahakari Bhavana Punjalkatte.
“It takes 250 years for plastic to mix with mud. It damages the organic environment of human beings and all the creatures. Collective effort is required to control its use. It is commendable that journalists have held a special programme with the cooperation of various organizations to create awareness among people,” he said.
Boiled rice was given to the local people who brought plastic waste as encouragement. Bantwal taluk patrakartara sangha president Prashanth Punjalkatte was honoured. Mangaluru zone deputy conservator of forests Dr Dinesh Kumar said that the awareness programme is commendable. District working journalist’s association president Srinivas Nayak Indaje gave an introductory address. He thanked journalist’s association president Prashanth Punjalkatte for having voluntarily donated rice.
Pilatabettu gram panchayat president Harshini Pushpanand presided over the programme. Journalist’s association president Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Bantwal taluk journalist’s association president Prashanth Punjalkatte, former district panchayat member Tungappa Bangera, Pilatabettu gram panchayat vice president Laxminarayana and district journalist’s association member Rajesh Daddangadi were present.
Local people had brought 85.350 kg of plastic waste. 400 kg rice was donated to them. Pilatabettu gram panchayat development officer Yamappa Koravaru administered the oath on cleanliness. Journalist’s association treasurer Pushparaj B N compered the programme. Bantwal taluk journalist’s association secretary Mounesh Vishwakarma rendered a vote of thanks.
