Washington, Apr 26 (AFP) Some 2,000 foreigners remain in the western Libyan port town of Misrata still hoping to be evacuated, US officials have said.
Forces loyal to Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi have been pushed out of rebel-held Misrata but rockets continue to hit Libya's third city, Libyan rebel sources said yesterday.
"As of today, we know about 2,000 third country nationals who are in Misrata and require evacuation," said Reuben Brigety, a senior State Department official who handles refugee issues.
Ships providing aid to rebels in Misrata are able to embark some of the refugees, Brigety told reporters.
In Misrata, there is "no need for further food aid at this point -- we feel the stockpiles are sufficient," said Mark Bartolini, USAID director, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.
