Karkala, Sep 17: “As a result of negligence by Karkala municipality, the Mangaluru road in the city is filled with potholes and has become unmotorable. The ruling party is trying to suppress the protest organised against bad roads,” said Shubhadha Rao, council member, Karkala.
Speaking at the protest meet held by the public against the bad condition of the Karkala – Mangaluru road on Saturday September 17, Shubhadha Rao said, “Due to the negligence of the city municipality, this road has become sluggish and it is shining like a golden road. The gravel looks like a silver coating on the golden road. As we protested in 2007, a few parts of this road were interlocked. Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar and the BJP ruled city municipality should immediately initiate concretisation of the Karkala-Mangaluru road. If this is done, we will honour them or else we will take out a donkey parade in protest.”
A buffalo was also paraded as a mark of protest. Public also held a protest march from Bhavani mill to Mooru Marg. A symbolic inauguration ceremony of the ‘golden road’ was conducted by cutting the ribbon at the Karkala bus stand.
“Municipal chairperson Suma Keshav gave a statement in this regard and said that the technical process for the road development work is under way, while the ruling party BJP's constituency president Mahaveer Hegde said that tenders have been awarded for the works. These statements have created confusion as to what is true and what is false,” added Shubhada Rao.
Karkala city municipality members Winnybold Mendonca, Somanath Municipality former president Seetharam, Prathima Rane businessman Rajendra, Youth Congress leader Yogish Inna and others were present.
