When a Light goes out

Where did that light go that once burned so bright?
For seventy years it shone strong and true,
It seemed to leave when your spirit took its flight,
Taking with it what we loved and knew.

Supportive husband, doting dad of three,
Bringer of laughter , friend who cared,
While true, most of us agree
These roles miss a lot of what was there .

You lit the way into a clear outline,
To encourage and push into the unknown,
Your faith in our ability to shine,
Was always greater than our own.

Through your poetry you inspired us all,
Indeed to write this poem while bereft,
Upon your memory we did call,
And we find that we are more than adept.

May we continue to radiate your brilliance,
Staying true to what we learned,
The praise and admiration of your essence,
Is richly deserved and well-earned.

So where does a light so intense go,
When its time is suddenly cut short,
It remains by keeping the rest of us aglow,
Reflecting the love and passion you taught.

We miss your presence, your encouraging ways,
Your kind words, your sharp wit,
Your determination, your tender gaze,
Your unconditional love, your sheer grit,
Your memory will never be erased,
From our hearts, our minds, and our spirit.
