Fr Denis Coelho SJ (90), passed away in Bangalore on Friday, February 12, 2016.

Funeral on Saturday, February 13 at 3.00 p.m. at Mount St Joseph, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore.

Born in 1926, Fr Denis joined the Jesuits in 1946 and was ordained a priest in 1958.

Fr Denis was the Principal of St Joseph’s European High School, Bangalore for over 10 years. It is during this time that he groomed many students in sports. One of them Rahul Dravid went on to become an international cricket star and remembers Fr Denis as his mentor and guide even to this day.

Fr Denis also served as Rector of St Joseph’s Indian High School, Bangalore and Mount St Joseph, Bangalore. He was a spiritual director of Jesuit brothers at Satya Nilayam Jesuit Philosophate in Chennai for three years. After his retirement he served as the chaplain of Lourdes Hospital and Convent in Dharwad and also as parish priest in Chittapur.

Fr Denis is known as an affable priest and able administrator. He was also known for his fine sense of humour, not to forget his spiritual depth. A loving priest who had an insight into human beings, he loved his students and was kind and warm towards them. Scores of his students remember him fondly even today.

Father Dennis Coelho, was my teacher and mentor during my three years at St Joseph's Indian High School. He thought moral science class once a week. He is the only teacher I vividly remember to this day close to 50 years. I once disagreed with what he said in class. This disagreement became the seed of his mentorship. I trusted him more than anyone else in the school and sought guidance in standard school difficulties. While I was writing my own memoir, I recalled him and researched him and came across this. I'm saden by his passing away. Eventually we all return to our creator sooner or later. The fond memories I have of him will remain and remind me and my readers of kind hearted person he was

Fr. Denis was the Principal at St. Joseph's during my education there and I have very fond memories of those years. Fr. Denis was kind, caring, gentle and forgiving. He was also a very good teacher and I really enjoyed attending his class. I believe he taught Math but its been many years. A very quiet man of intellectual depth, he will be remembered and dearly missed.

When I was in St. Joseph’s Indian Middle School Std. V and VI (1976 – 79), Fr. Denis Coelho was the Principal of High School (the author has overlooked this) with Fr. Sunith Prabhu, his deputy. A handsome priest, though he was not my Principal, I used to admire his gentle and soft nature during the combined Assembly we always had. May his soul rest in peace.
