Fr Valerian John Fernandes (64), belonging to the Catholic diocese of Asansol, West Bengal, passed away on February 6, 2016.

The funeral ceremony will be held at Cathedral of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Asansol on Tuesday, February 9 at 10.00 am.

Fr Valerian was a native of St Ann Church, Nala-Mavinakatte, Belthangady. He was born on May 6, 1952. After finishing his initial schooling in the native place, he joined the diocese of Kolkatta. He was ordianed a priest on May 11, 1979. For he last 37 years of his priesthood, he has worked in various missions and different parishes of the diocese. In the year 1997 when the Catholic diocese of Asansol was erected, he opted to work in that diocese. A simple and dynamic priest, he worked tirelessly for the development of the diocese.

We remember when we were small and you took us on your shoulders in Jarigebail for fun. You were kind and strong & you haven't changed even though we grew up as adults but remained as your little nephews n nieces
We knew that you were thoughtful,helpful,caring and supportive too. You were always been right there for us in good times n bad times in spite of your busy schedule.

We will miss your naughtiness,pinches especially your cunning smile when you do some mischievous stuff with us.Your Kannada English words used to get mixed up very often and we used have a great laugh with you for example " conductor 9 number seat nalli bereyavaru seatiddare instead of kulithukondiddare " and also your Bengali and Santali conversations with us thinking we supposed to know those your favorite languages ??? Since u were multi linguistic you used to get mixed up many languages and at times we were not able to understand what u wanted to tell us but we wouldn't care to ask again with u but only had a hearty laugh among ourselves repeating what you did say and the best thing is that u were never used to get mad at us rather u join with us for fun and laughter

You are our special uncle who will hold special place in our hearts more than that you 've been a special friend " A cherished friend to us "

YES FR. VALERIAN WAS THE FIRST PRIEST OF THE THEN NALA WARD NOW A PARISH IT WAS AFTER HIM THAT WE HAVE 5 PRIEST AND 3 CLOISTERED NUNS, AND MORE THAN 7 NUNS BELONGING TO OTHER CONGREGATIONS, HE WAS THE LEADER HERE IN THIS WARD/PARISH AND DUE TO THIS I HAVE NO WORDS TO EXPLAIN HIS WORKS AT CALCATTA AND ASSANSOL DIOCESE, AS I HAD A GLIMPSE OF HIS WORK IN CALCATTA/ASSANSOL AS I HAD VISITED HIM IN 2005 AND 2007. HE WAS AN OPEN BOOK. LET HIS LIFE BE A LIVING EXAMPLE TO ALL OF US. ON HEARING HIS DEATH I VISITED HIS NATIVE PLACE AND I PRAYED ON THE SOIL HE WAS BORN AND SPENT MY NIGHT TOO.
