Letitia Joyce D’Souza (92), beloved daughter of the late Lawrence D’Souza and the late Lily D’Souza (nee Fernandes) of Bendore, Mangalore (D’Souza Families of Bondel, part of the family later moved to Bendore); a longtime resident of Hyattsville, MD USA, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014.

Loving sister of the late Edwin Leonard (the late Kathleen Saldanha) of Maryland, USA; the late Valerian Piedade (the late Celine Rodrigues) of Shivabag, Kadri, Mangalore; Frederick Francis (Jane Rego) of Urwa, Mangalore; the late Walter; the late Elvira Theresita (Hilary D’Souza) of Urwa, Mangalore.

On Sept.10, 2014 I visited Joyce at St. Thomas Moore Rehab. and Nursing Center, Hyattsville, Md. When I walked inside the room, Joyce was awake, looked at me and asked for my name. I was touched and I wept. I then said "Joyce..I am here to say Thank You for all what you did for me when Eugene was hospitalized at John's Hopkins Baltimore and later when he passed away". She then asked me where is Eugene. I replied "in Heaven with Jesus". Joyce smiled and said "let us take some flowers and offer to Jesus". She kept repeating these words a few times. This made me feel that her mind was on Jesus all the time and perhaps knew that He would welcome her precious Soul into His Kingdom where there is no more pain or suffering and will rest in Eternal Peace.
Before leaving I told Joyce that I would come back a few days later but that did not happen. Anyway I feel good that I had a chance to see Joyce for the last time and express my gratitude. Joyce, you will be missed dearly by the many who asked for help and you never turned them down. RIP

I would like to honour the life of a humble, holy and outstanding leader of our community. Joyce D'Souza did us proud at home and in the USA . She courageously took initiatives in education, works of charity and social organization. Her achievements outnumbered her years and she has set a standard for us to follow.
May angels lead her into Paradise.

With my deepest condolences to the family. Joyce's faith was her moral compass. She believed it and loved it to the hilt. It set the course for her life on earth. The late Mr. Anthony Planthara made our paths cross in the mid-1990s to venerate our dear Mother of Vailankanni in full vigor in the Nation's Capital with the opening of the Oratory at the Basilica in 1997 via the IACA National Committee of which I was a member. Also, I wish she had known before her demise that Sri Lanka is blessed with its first Saint in Blessed Joseph Vaz (born in Goa April 1651 and died in Sri Lanka as a lead missionary January 1711) who will be canonized in January 2015 by His Holiness Pope Francis in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I'm sure she'll witness this from above. May her soul rest in peace.

My condolences come to you on behalf of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation with gratitude to our dear former Sr. Acquelina whose contribution to the Congregation has been great and significant. As the former Principal of St. Ann's College of Education it was she who made the College the UNESCO Partner School which I noted myself as a former Principal of the College of Education myself. She was an innovative and dynamic person always and we are happy that the good work she had started earlier she has continued in great measure in the field of service to society mainly from the USA.
The Superior General and all the AC Sisters salute her and thank God for her contribution to society and all the needy persons, the special charism which was characteristic of her.
We pray for the repose of her soul and pray that the Lord may grant her the rich reward of eternal bliss in His heavenly Kingdom. May she always remain as a powerful intercessor for all her loved ones.

I got to know Joyce intimately during the last years of her life. I have learned a lot from her example and I will treasure her help and understanding in my senior years, She loved Jesus and Mary and I am sure she is now in their company. Joyce please continue to help me understand life and people. You were so good I will miss you and your support.

Letitia Joyce was the founder and was also a very active President of the Indian American Catholic Association (IACA) of Washington D.C., which was founded in 1993 and is a non-profit organization. This association has grown under her leadership and is the cornerstone of the Mangalorean community around Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, and New York area.

She always had much reverence for the rosary. Towards her end days she drew comfort from prayers, particularly the rosary.

She was a great philanthropist. Her charity work covered many a poor, both in India and in the US. Many Catholic institutions have been the recipients of her generosity. As a last wish she was specifically interested in supporting the Leprosy Hospital of Fr. Muller Charitable Institutions

In lieu of flowers, one can contribute to St. Joseph Leprosy Hospital, Fr. Mullers Charitable Institutions, Kankanady, Mangalore 575 002, Karnataka State, India. This was her last wish.

Continued...Part 2

A highly intellectual scholar, she was the professor & principal of St Agnes College, Mangalore for several years. Later in 1974 she proceeded to the US to pursue a Masters degree in Social Work from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.

She returned to India to become the utive Director of YWCA, New Delhi and later at Mumbai. Her passion for caring for the under privileged led her to work as a social worker at Seva Sadan in Bhopal establishing women's shelters and women's clubs to improve their plight.

In 1981 she returned to the US, worked as a social worker at the House of Ruth in Maryland, USA the Little Sisters of the Poor, Washington D.C and the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC where she worked for most of her remaining life dedicating herself to the life of the poor, sick, and the elderly. Being one of the early immigrants from Mangalore in the D.C. area, she founded the D.C. Mangalorean Association with the help of friends and family in 1989.

Her contribution to the Indian Christian community in Washington D.C. was well known. Her distinguished leadership in galvanizing our Indian Catholic community in various cities of the US, raising funds for the installation of a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Vailankanni (also known as “Lourdes of the East”) at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC was a great achievement.

Dear Uncle Fred & Aunty Jane Uncle Hilary and all family members, please accept our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies on Aunty Joyce’s demise. She was a great lady. I have known her for quite some time (at least for the last 40 years). Here a small write-up on her life.

Ms. Letitia Joyce D’Souza was a very well known social worker in Washington D.C.

She was born in Bendore, Mangalore on May 3, 1921, eldest among the six children, to the late Lawrence D’Souza and the late Lily D’Souza (nee Fernandes) of Bendore, Mangalore. She hailed from the D’Souza Families of Bondel, (part of the family later moved to Bendore). Her father, the late Lawrence D'Souza had worked for Peninsular & Oriental (P&O) Shipping Company.

Like her late father she had acquired leadership qualities at a very young age and a daring spirit to stand up to any injustice, but at the same time she developed from her mother a caring spirit and the talent for helping others.

She graduated from St. Agnes College, Mangalore with a B.A. degree in Economics and a degree in education from St. Anne’s Training College with the highest honors in both degrees.

She went on to graduate with a Masters Degree in Political Science from Patna University where she was awarded two gold medals for her outstanding achievements, while receiving the first rank in the University.
