Fr Herbert Noronha SJ (76), passed away in Fathima Retreat House on Tuesday, September 27, 2011.

Funeral on Wednesday, September 28 at 4.00 pm at Fatima Retreat House, Mangalore.

Fr Herbert hailed from Ammembal Parish. He was the headmaster of a primary school at Neerude, and then joined the Jesuits Society of Jesus and served for 51 years. All his life he was a teacher at St Aloysius College Middle School, and was instrumental in bringing about changes in the school. He was a Konkani writer and served as editor of ‘Jezu Rai’ in Mangalore till he died.

When I was in middle school, we used to call Fr. Noronha 'BOLO' after the fighter in Bruce Lee's movie, Enter the Dragon. Fr. Noronha resembled Bolo Yeung both physically, and also in the way he meted out punishment with his unrelenting cane. I recall how Fr. Noronha would end the student assemblies by saying, "BOLO matha ki jai!" Of course, we would shout BOLO at the top of our voices...but only we knew what it all meant :)

I owe Fr. Noronha a great deal for teaching me how not to treat my children, and the value of showing them the way of love, and not fear. May the Good Lord bless Fr. Noronha and grant him peace.

Fr. Noronha was the headmaster when I was in middle school. He took corporal punishment to an extreme...more a disciplinarian than an educator. I wish him peace and tranquility!

It's very painful for me to know that Fr. Herbert Noronha passed away. I was fortunate to have met him on my recent visit to FRH and had a face to face discussion with him when I went to his office on 21st Sept. to buy few religious items. Every time I was coming in & going out of the FRH I used to meet him on the internal road and he used to give me a pleasant smile when greeted. I'll never forget him whenever I go & live in FRH in future. May his soul rest in peace with the Angels in Heaven.

When we think of our primary school we always think about the smiling face of our dear headmaster Rev Fr Noronha. He taught us what was right and what was wrong and played a major part in our lives. We will be always grateful for this. We pray to God to grant him internal rest and let perpetual light shine upon him and may his soul rest in peace.

It is sad to hear about the death of Fr. Noronha. He was off course a disciplinarian but also had a kind heart to help the poor.He was very paticular about studies but at the same time gave very good encouragement for extra curicular activities specially sports. He has done his best in this life and may God grant him eternal rest.

He was very strict and discipline was of prime importantce to him. Therefore during our schools days he was not loved unlike some other teachers. We were scared of him, but it did not mean that he did not care. He was a different personality during excursions when he used to be very jovial. But looking back the hundreds of us who passed through his stewardship and are successful in life, I can can say that it was his discipline that has made us what we are today and for this we owe him a lot. It was sad hearing about his sudden passing away. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

I hope he will be able find a place in heaven. Many a little kids have suffered a lot for no reason due to his extreme discipline mostly with a bamboo cane. Kindness, temperament, understanding is what a Godly person should pocess.

Fr Noronha was the headmaster of St. Aloysius middle school in 1978. He gave utmost importance to discipline.
He was very helpful to poor students from neighbouring villages. He waived school fees for many students including me. He supported extra curricular activities like fancydress competitions, gymnastics, scout and yoga asana. KP vincent Sir, Saturine Silva sir(silva mestry, Valli mestry, BN Rao(drawing and music) were excellent teachers when Fr Noronha was the headmaster. May Lord Jesus grant you eternal rest, father.

Fr. Herbert Noronha being the cousin of my dad Late Teddy Lobo has been very close to our family. He was very jovial and always had a lot of interesting stories to tell. It is very sad to hear of his passing away. May his soul rest in peace.
