I knew Raymondbab from the days when he worked in the then-fashionable showroom of a leading textile brand in Colaba, then for an export house in downtown Bombay. For a time, I lived with him in a paying guest accommodation on then Frere Road, close to GPO. Then I saw him fronting an export house with an office on PM Road in downtown Bombay. Along the way, the ever-restless and ambitious Raymondbab did educational courses and added degrees to his name, but he never forgot his roots and remained amiable. Raymondbab always aspired to be his own boss and set up his own business which, according to my nodding acquaintance, flourished because he considered the customer to be king – even the least of them – and was hands-on. I am from near Bellore and I had known Raymond’s wife, Jessy, and her father and mother who had a well-patronised one-storeyed landmark shop close to Bellore Church. I wish I could have been in Bombay to attend dear Raymondbab’s funeral. May all the bereaved be consoled and Raymondbab receive his well-deserved reward in heaven. - John B.
